How does SFP work?

The Swedish People’s party of Finland consists of Local Chapters, Regions and Member Organisations. The Party Organisation is divided into 5 Regions: Helsinki, Uusimaa, Southwest Finland, Ostrobothnia and the rest of the country is grouped together in one Regional Organisation. The Regional Organisations support their local chapters in matters that need attention on a local level.

Annual Party Congress

The Annual Party Congress is the highest decision-making body within the party. The Congress sets political goals and establishes guidelines for the party. The Annual Party Congress gathers representatives from all the Local Chapters, Organisations, The Swedish Youth of Finland, The Women’s Organisation of the Swedish People’s Party and The Swedish Seniors of Finland to take decisions on common matters. The total number of representatives at the Annual Party Congress is around 300 persons.

The Annual Party Congress is usually held during the second weekend of June.

Party Council

The Party Council consists of the Party President, three Vice Presidents and 46 members. The Party Council is responsible for providing long-term political guidelines for the party, electing the Party Executive Board, settling the financial statement and making a statement for the proposals for the Annual Party Congress.

Party Executive Board

The Party Executive Board consists of the Party President, three Vice Presidents and twelve members that has been appointed by the Party Council. Apart from the members, the Chair of the Party Council, the party’s Ministers and member(s) of the European Parliament as well as the Chair of the Financial Committee have voice without vote at the Party Executive Board meetings.

The Swedish Parliamentary Group

Since the Parliamentary Elections of 2019 the Swedish Parliamentary Group consists of 10 of the Parliament’s 200 mandates: nine members from the Swedish People’s Party and the one member representing the Åland Islands.

The Swedish People’s Party in the European Parliament

In the European Parliament the Swedish People’s party is a member of the liberal Renew Europe-group. The Swedish People’s Party is also a Full Member of the ALDE Party since 1995. SFP is represented in the European Parliament by MEP Nils Torvalds.

European Election Manifesto

As part of the campaign for the 2019 elections to the European Parliament, the member parties of ALDE in collaboration with member parties and partners from across the European Union adopted a Manifesto defining their priorities of their political action at European level.

Individual Membership of the ALDE Party

Party members of Svenska folkpartiet who also wish to be involved at the European level can become Individual Members of the ALDE Party.

Regional Organisations

The Regional Organisations deal with matters that are of regional interest. The Regional Organisations support the Local Chapters in their area. Nominating candidates for Municipal and Parliamentary Elections is an important activity in the regions as well as running the campaign activities before elections. The Regional Organisations are run by a Regional Board.

The Local Chapters

The Swedish People’s Party has Local Chapters all over Finland. The Local Chapters are Member Organisations of the party and they are entitled to voice and vote at the Annual Party Congress.

Municipal Organisations

In municipalities with several Local Chapters, the Municipal Organisation acts as an umbrella and a local cooperative organisation.

Special Interest Groups

Apart from Local Chapters you can also belong to the Swedish People’s Party through a number of Special Interest Groups. At the moment there are nine of these. These groups are not localized to a particular region, but have members from all around the country, brought together through the theme of the group. You can find a list here.

 

Policy Committees

The Party Executive Board appoints Policy Committees as needed. The current Committees can be found here.

The Swedish Youth of Finland

The Swedish Youth of Finland (Svensk Ungdom) is the youth organisation of the Swedish People’s party.
